På flykt från missväxt och nöd till ett löfte om mjölk och honung. |
From hard times in the old world To the promised land of milk and honey |
At the end of the 19th century there was hard times. In Sweden there was about 4 million people - every 4th - 1 million - went away - most of them to America. Some who managed well in the new country helped friends and relatives to come over even after it had become better times at home. There was quite a long period and different reasons to move to the new world in the west across the big ocean. It is therefore a big probability that as a Swede you have some relatives in the USA. We have looked a little closer in our nearest family. |
Farmors faster Frida Bengtsson. |
Granny's aunt Frida Bengtsson The most known American citizen in the family as she was often back to Sweden and was a busy writing letters and postcards. Frida was a maid at a Rockefeller. Scandinavian women were much liked by better families in the states. They had a reputation to be honest, intelligent and skilful. Frida had no children, but married a Norwegian who also worked in New York. We have lots of letters and photos from Frida. We can see that she had a TV set during the late 50s. We don't believe that it was very common by ordinary service people at that time. |
Farfars farbror Karl Pearson |
Grandpa´s uncle Karl Pearson Karl traveled as young with a steamer to America, by Canada to settle in Omaha in Nebraska. Naturally he became a farmer, as this was his background from home. Today there is only one "Pearson" left, as their happened to be more girls who married and got other surnames. Karl´s family is now spread from Georgia and Florida in the east by Kansas City in the "Mid West" to the most southern and western parts of the USA - Hawaii where Ron lives. |
